As a wedding story-teller, the best part of a wedding is get to listen to their love story: how they meet, know each other, and love each other. You can never get enough of this.
Whose Wedding: Sylvia&Rick ( April 2, 2016)
As Ted Mosby would put it, “Kids, I’m going to tell you the story of how we met each other.” It was way back in the Fall of 2006, where we were both students at Stony Brook University. Our first official meeting was uneventful. We were separately invited to a group lunch by a mutual friend at a taco joint right off campus and sat on opposite ends of the table. Neither of us really took notice of each other.
However, at the end of the night, I knew him as Rick and I was introduced to him as “Squishy”, a nickname I had picked up in college.
Nope, it wasn’t until this night on November 17, 2006. I had unknowingly caught his attention singing a duet on Asian Night with his former Mandarin teaching assistant, Candy. It was a bilingual duet to the cheesiest song ever (not my choice), Brown Eyes by Destiny’s Child.
Soon after, Rick expressed his interest.
Our friends decided it would be fun to set us up and made reservations for a group date to a Valentine’s Day Candlelit Dinner at White Castle. On this bitterly cold night, we bonded over kicking ice off of the car, Street-Fighter style and attempting to make stars out of straws.
To be honest though, we haven’t been to a White Castle since then.
After a handful of group dinners and a date at Costco, we managed to hit it off and became an item.
We spent the next 7 years…
gallivanting within NYC, throughout the US and beyond, feasting on yummies, sharing our favorite pastimes
(Snowboarding,Comic Con), exploring new hobbies (Funko POPs)
and spending fun quality time with each other and with those nearest and dearest to us.
Until one day, Rick decided to ask a question…
He had the perfect cover-up: I had a planned a whole itinerary for a homecoming trip to Stony Brook University with a few of our friends.
On the morning of, we woke up excited to dine at our favorite local brunch place, Maureen’s Kitchen. Stuffed with croissant french toasts, we toured around campus taking in all that has changed.
We eventually stopped by the SAC (Student Activity Center) for what I thought was only a bathroom break…
As I tried to gather up the troops to carry on to the next point of interest, I noticed that Rick was taking an awfully long time in the auditorium. I peeked in and saw that he was taking glamour shots of the POP toys. I got on stage with them for old times’ sake. Afraid we would be caught for trespassing, I told him we should hurry out. However, Rick willingly got on stage for a photo op and instead of posing for the picture, he turned to me.
“Squishy. It’s been an awesome 8 years,” he said.
On that same stage I had charmed him years ago, he now had me speechless. He then took a box out of his pocket, got on one knee and asked “Will you marry me?”
Thus begins the next chapter in our lives which includes YOU and we can’t wait to celebrate!
