I look forward to some fun in the sun when I hear my brides speak of Destination Weddings. I love New York but getting away, even if it’s for work, is always a good time. Destination Weddings have gone from a rare occurrence to the norm. More and more couples are swapping out their fur coats and snow boots for bathing suits and flip-flops. Here are a few key tips and pointers to consider during the initial planning stages of your Destination Wedding!
1) It’s all about location! Choose a destination that speaks true to the both of you; a place where you know you’ll feel comfortable, and that your guests will love. This will help determine the mood of your wedding. Do you want something romantic? Something rustic and culture-focused? Or do you want something that screams fun? Some of my favorite destinations include: Vieques Island off of Puerto Rico, Old Town Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, Puerto Plata in Dominican Republic and of course anywhere in Italy!
2) Research and timing! Be sure to plan your wedding at the right time. It’s important to plan your wedding during a time when rain fall is low and other climate-related issues are less likely to occur. It is also key to know what fun and adventurous activities there are to do at that time of year. Yes it is your wedding but, your guests have traveled a long way to celebrate your special day, so make sure there is something for everyone to take part in!
3) Fly out there! Take a weekend trip with your fiancé and scout out your venue, hotel, local activities, restaurants and more. It’s always good to know first-hand just what to expect. At the end of your trip, you’ll have a much easier time aligning your Wedding Day expectations with what is actually available. After doing so, I strongly suggest taking a second trip at some point. On this second trip you ideally would have already booked your venue before arrival, which makes this trip the ideal time for tastings, meetings and walk-throughs with vendors. By the time you arrive home you’ll have secured your venue and vendors – everything else can be taken care of virtually!
